Peurunka’s beautiful natural setting and pristine environment make it possible to relax, breathe easily and renew the body and spirit. Through our commitment to environmental responsibility, we aim to preserve our unique nature and natural resources as well as to promote the health and well-being of people. Environmental considerations and sustainable development steer us in our decision-making and operations. Our values can be summed up as: customer service, environmental values and acting responsibly.
Each year, we set targets for such things as water, electricity and energy consumption as well as waste sorting and reuse. Peurunka has an ISO 9001 Quality Management certificate and ISO 14001 Environmental Management certificate. Achievement of the set targets and results are monitored regularly. Inspecta Finland assesses our Quality and Environmental Management systems and our overall performance every year.
Peurunka’s heating is primarily produced by bioenergy (pellets). Heavy fuel oil is only used during the peak output months of the winter.
We have signed an Industry Energy Efficiency Agreement, based on which we constantly develop our energy efficiency and take the environment into consideration in every aspect of our operations. The goal is a continuous reduction in energy consumption and maintaining any improvements made.
Peurunka is involved in an energy efficiency benchmarking survey (e.g. electricty, heating and water consumption) conducted by Promain Oy. According to the benchmarking report, Peurunka performs well above the industry average in energy efficiency.
Wherever possible, we use local operators and local raw ingredients. We take the environment into account in our renovation work and new construction. When making decisions on the procurement of machinery, equipment and other devices, an emphasis is given to energy efficiency, the environment and sustainability. We avoid using disposable products and packaging.
We sort and recycle paper and cardboard, glass, energy waste, metals, biowaste, bottles and ay hazardous wastes. We recycle used furniture and textiles, also donating them for use in third sector. The water in the pool complex is cleaned with chlorine as well as a sand filtration system, ultraviolet light and enzymes. All wastewater is led to the municipal sewerage system, where it is properly treated.
We give our customers the opportunity to contribute to our environmentally responsible operations by, for example, sorting waste, using engine block heaters with timers, adjusting room thermostats, etc. We have also taken public transportation into account. There are excellent bus connections to Peurunka.
We require all our service providers and product suppliers to have environmentally-friendly operating models and applicable environmental management systems. When it comes to our service providers, we have chosen those whose environmental commitments mirror our own, such as SOL (environmental programmes and goals), Rusanen Tekstiilipalvelut (Europe’s most modern and environmentally-friendly textile care facility in Varkaus), Kespro (Kesko Group environmental policy).We receive our heat and hot water from the state-of-the-art Fortum Power & Heat heating plant located in our region. The plant produces energy primarily using environmentally-friendly wood pellets from Central Finland.
We closely follow developments in environmental issues in Finland and abroad. We are involved in the development of building utilities, control systems, heat recovery, etc. We provide environmental training to our own employees and those of our partners.
Today, Peurunka and its surrounding area is one of the most important tourist destinations in Finland – and not without reason. Peurunka’s story of growth perfectly embodies combining the ideology of wellness with successful enterprise. Since its founding in 1974, Peurunka has managed to build a venerable, well-respected brand by providing excellent, professional service to tourists and rehabilitation patients alike. Finnish President Urho Kaleva Kekkonen was one of the driving forces behind the founding of Peurunka. The initial idea came from veteran’s organisation, Korsuveljet, which wanted to establish a wellness retreat devoted to the rest and relaxation of war veterans as well as to ensure that future generations would also preserve their fitness and health. This idea still lies at the very core of Peurunka, even though the veterans of Finland’s wars only account for a small percentage of our clientele. We motivate people through physical, mental and social activity.
1975 saw the completion of Peurunka’s Sports Dome and pool complex, which were inaugurated by President Urho Kekkonen. Unique even by European standards, a new “river flow” pool was opened at Peurunka. The spa and its attendant fitness facilities were very popular among not only our war veterans, but also the public at large. This popularity led to the completion of the current spa hotel wing, which serves rehabilitation patients as well as guests of Peurunka.
Peurunka’s operations are divided into two wellness areas: the Spa Hotel and rehabilitation services. The Peurunka Medical Rehabilitation Centre is an expert in rehabilitation and pioneer in evidence-based rehabilitation. We create new models for rehabilitation, fitness and wellness services, and we conduct research on our own operations. Peurunka Medical Rehabilitation Centre works in goal-oriented co-operation with universities and universities of applied sciences, developing its operations by means of applied scientific research. Indeed, Peurunka should be seen as a single, extensive entity, where people can come to enjoy themselves and feel good.
The Peurunka Spa Hotel opened in 1984 and the current restaurant facilities were constructed in 1994. In the 2000s, the aim was to ambitiously raise the profile of the Spa Hotel. In 2011, approximately 13 million euros were invested in the complete remodelling of the spa and fitness facilities.
Today, Peurunka is one of the largest privately-owned hotels in Finland. “The fact that we are privately Finnish-owned ensures continuous product development, agile operational capabilities, fast decision-making and maintaining our commitment to social responsibility. The revenues earned here stay here in Central Finland. Peurunka provides not only well-being for the area, but also jobs,” explains Managing Director Seppo Virta.
Today, Peurunka is also a key international tourist destination in Finland. In 2013, 140,000 overnight stays were booked by guests of 31 different nationalities. Peurunka is not just buildings – it is also a tourism area, which boasts the Spa Hotel as well as conference facilities, an ice arena, golf course, several saunas, experiential tourism service providers, shops and beauty and health businesses. The area has over 20 operators, which provide services for tourists and other actors in the area.
